| The partnership between the UN and the
Philippines began in 1945 when the Philippines joined with 49
other nations in signing the United Nations Charter in San Francisco,
USA. This partnership has progressed since then into a number
of development initiatives, activities, and programmes.
Technical, financial, and other forms of assistance to the
Philippines began in the late 1940's, as the country recovered
from the ravages of World War II. In 1948, United Nations
Children's Fund (UNICEF) opened an office in Manila, one of
its first country offices in Asia. The Western Pacific Regional
Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) was set up in
Manila in 1951, followed by the United Nations Information
Centre (UNIC) in 1953.
The establishment of the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) in 1965 further strengthened the UN's cooperation with
the Philippines. In 1970, the International Labour Organization
(ILO) opened its office here in the Philippines, followed
in 1972 by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Then in 1975, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR) began its humanitarian assistance with the refugees.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) opened its Manila
office in 1977.
Other UN organizations are represented through the office
of the Resident Representative of UNDP, who also serves as
the Resident Co-ordinator of the UN System's Operational Activities
for Development in the Philippines.
The Bretton Woods institutions -- the World Bank (WB), the
International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) are also represented in the Philippines. |
